A ‘power strip in my heart’
 by Yifan, Kent, OH

I am from China, a country far away from the Christian culture. Like most people in China, I was an atheist. More than that, I was very close to becoming a member of the communist party that believes in materialism.
I never considered going to America; however, my university in China has a program with Kent State University and so I made up my mind to take this opportunity to pursue my master’s degree in the United States.
It’s never easy to start a new life in a foreign country. The biggest difficulty is not from the normal livelihood, sometimes it is from loneliness. When we arrived, the famous Ohio winter was coming and my roommates and I still didn’t have beds or other furniture for our apartment. As new international students, we are very isolated and didn’t know who could help us or how to find help.
One day, I just went through a stack of flyers collected from the beginning of the semester that I hadn’t got a chance to look at. Suddenly, a guy named JJ with a funny beard got my attention. Immediately, I got the feeling that this guy was going to help us out. So I called JJ, ISM director. Thank God, I was right. JJ not only helped us get whatever we needed, but also became our best friend.
After that JJ began to invite us to join the Bible study and various student activities at the Faith Lutheran Church and Campus Ministry. I just thought that is a good opportunity to practice my oral English and enjoy some free food and drinks. However, gradually I began to enjoy the Bible study because after reading the Holy Bible I felt peace in my heart.
So, one day I decided to join one of the church services. The beautiful choir and the holy environment deeply moved me. During the praying, I just prayed to the God: Dear Lord, if you exist, please let me feel your holy power.
Suddenly, I could feel a power strip in my heart and I began to sweat. I think I’m very fortunate, because not everyone has the chance to feel God’s power in this way. Looking back at the things I have now, God designed a unique way for me to become a Christian. I know that each day is a gift from God and I am going to follow God’s road to serve Him by serving everyone in the community.
